I would say this is the perfect song of the month for Black History Month too, coincidently. A conscious track from a conscious hip hop artist from New York: “Blu Spirit”. Syracuse to be specific. His fanbase? Super concentrated. His Facebook page, while it has only 943 likes: the new post about “Contradiction” has 97 likes and 31 shares!
Most artists I know and work with definitely don’t get that many shares on a SoundCloud track. That’s loyalty.
Speaking of, congratulations to them just breaking 2000 plays on the track on SoundCloud!
I respect the young MC/producer combo (Dé being the producer: from Nashua, NH), as they work very close together. It’s not like most relationships where you just send over a beat and it’s done.
They create a product from the beginning to the end and make sure even their marketing and distribution ends up in ultimate success. To understand that at age 23 is impressive. Most artists, especially younger, do not appreciate the business aspect of this game. They are friends and both have big dreams of making it very far. That ultimately will drive them forward. Whenever one is down, the other can pick him back up.
You have to have a certain amount of trust in the artist, as a producer too. A lot of work and time goes into those beats and creating the perfect engineered product. Dé has created the amazing art, too for tracks like “Contradiction”, “Scars” and “Count On Me” that have appealed to so many.
Also, Dé’s lyric videos did incredible on Facebook with hundreds of combined shares throughout the Boston/NH music industry and as well HIGHLY promoted through Blu Spirit’s side. The duo makes time for promotion, and realize it’s as important as the creation process. At one point I saw Blu respond to EVERY single viewer comment on a lyric video, and there were 150+ comments.
Music is just their life. They breathe it. I’ve talked to Dé, and he uses music as healing. If he’s not in the right zone, he’ll create a beat. When you’re in that deep, you can’t stop. He’s been making beats since he was a young teen.
“I had no drive, no direction. I wasn’t steering right
I hated my complexion, thats reflecting through the mirror light”.
When I first heard this song I had to replay a bunch. I was just OBSESSED with that chorus.
“I’m nothing but a contradiction that be killin myself”
My first reaction was “Jesus this beat is on ANOTHER level, Blu Spirit BETTER deliver on this”. And he did. I’m proud of him.
Over the past few months I’ve gotten to know him better & he’s become a friend. We’ve shared industry insights, and he’s a very smart young man. His grind is inspiring me too. We certainly want him on a show when ProU throws one in NY.
I told him I could imagine the crowd vibing heavy to this when he performs it live. It made me wanna dance. So that’s what I did!
Funnily enough, he said “I wrote this precisely with performing it in mind”. I thought that was crazy synchronicity. Enjoy!
Stay tuned for more. We feel very strongly about this duo and their success together.
